The team's tents in the mountains of Al Haouz

Helping Hands, Reconstructing Hope

About this project

When a strong earthquake hit the province of Al Haouz in September 2023, families in the mountain village of Ifourir lost their homes, and winter was coming. Shortly afterwards, the Language Café of Volunteer in Morocco in Tetouan was already talking about the disaster.

From 12 to 16 October 2023 a team visited the village to prepare the help together with the residents. From 10 November to 1 December 2023 an international team of 15 young people aged 18 to 30 stayed in tents in the village, supported by Volunteer in Morocco.

Together with the residents, the volunteers mapped what was needed and cleared rubble, among other places in the yard of a family. The team also raised money and arranged material help, including building materials, blankets, clothing, food and supplies for shelter.

For children and young people the volunteers organised football activities, clean-ups, talks and photography workshops. Young villagers got to know international volunteers this way and heard about the opportunities of the European Solidarity Corps.

In June 2024 the project was followed by Continuing Hope, Building Together.
